As the line that connects us all, FortisAlberta has always been here with you powering our province’s growth.
We were there when Calgary Power began delivering the first electricity produced at the Horseshoe Falls hydroelectric plant to consumers in and around Calgary.
Throughout the ‘20s and ‘30s, more generation was added and our province’s electric distribution system grew as more customers were connected.
In the late ‘40s, consumers in rural areas connected to the grid in ever-increasing numbers as the provincial government, public utilities and electricity co-operatives partnered to electrify farms, ranches and homes.
In the ‘50s, FortisAlberta’s predecessor, TransAlta (formerly Calgary Power), played a key role in the creation of the Farm Electric Service Ltd., or FESL, which quickly became a common and vital feature of life in rural communities.
Almost 20 years ago, FortisAlberta continued the legacy of Calgary Power and TransAlta by assuming the operation of approximately 60 per cent of the province’s electric distribution system, serving customers throughout central and southern Alberta.
As a local company, staffed by Albertans from across our service area, we are proud to preserve the heritage that has been entrusted to us to provide safe, reliable and affordable electricity in one of the most beautiful, and challenging, natural environments in the world.
DELIVERING THE POWER YOU COUNT ON
We understand that the last thing you want to worry about is whether your power is going to go out. That is why we are dedicated to building a resilient system that we can monitor and operate 24/7 to minimize the number of outages you experience, and the time it takes to restore power when an outage happens.
All Albertans in our service area, even those who are members of a Rural Electrification Association (REA), are connected to FortisAlberta’s distribution network and benefit from the reliability of our system, ensuring electricity is there when you need it.
One way to understand the role that FortisAlberta plays in delivering power to you is to see where we fit in Alberta’s electricity industry.
At FortisAlberta, it is the job of our 1,200 employees, including 350 line workers serving and living in your communities, to deliver your electricity when and where you need it. We are the people you know and trust to keep your lights on.
We meet that commitment with on-going investment in our system to ensure we minimize the frequency and effect of outages and keep pace with your evolving power needs, whether we are powering your farm, business or home.
From our centralized control centre in Airdrie, we can see and respond to what is happening on our entire system in real-time. When an issue occurs, our operators can remotely diagnose the cause, reroute power around most system outages or restore power, often in seconds. In cases where an outage needs an in-person response, our operators can identify and dispatch a local service crew in the area for the quickest possible response.
At FortisAlberta, we work hard every day to provide power to your homes, businesses and farms. It is a responsibility we inherited from the generations that came before us and we’re proud to carry it on.
As the line that connects us all, we help Albertans power the future we deserve, together.
